Four Big Signs to Get Your Car’s Transmission Checked

HRS AutoCare • October 1, 2021

How often do you think about your car’s transmission? If you’re like most car owners, HRS AutoCare is pretty sure that your transmission is not something you think about every day. But if you’re noticing any of these signs, you might want to get yours checked.

Grinding or Clunking Sounds as the Car Shifts

Normally you probably don’t hear your transmission as it does its job. The transmission is supposed to operate smoothly, shifting from one gear to another. If you’re hearing more noise than usual, especially if that noise sounds like clunking or grinding sounds, that could mean that your transmission is having issues. It’s highly likely that you’re experiencing other issues, too.

Transmission Fluid Under the Car

Any time you notice that there’s a leak, of any kind, it’s important to get that checked out as soon as you possibly can. But a transmission fluid leak can be an indication that there’s big trouble occurring somewhere in your car’s transmission. You’re more likely to see transmission fluid underneath the back of the car than in other locations, so if you do see a puddle elsewhere it’s likely a different type of fluid.

The Transmission Doesn’t Seem to Be Working

When you press the gas pedal down, your car should respond. Ideally, that means that the engine produces power that the transmission uses to turn the drive wheels of the car, propelling the car in the direction you want to go. But when the transmission isn’t working properly, that power transfer doesn’t happen and the transmission hesitates or fails to get that power to the drive wheels at all. And you end up not going anywhere.

The Check Engine Light Is On

It’s also possible that you’re not noticing any trouble yet, but your car’s computer is, and it turns on the check engine light. That can be a scary light to see, but it is a warning that you cannot ignore. Eventually, damage in the transmission affects the car’s engine. Getting the problem resolved sooner rather than later is extremely important because this can mean that your engine and transmission both end up failing.

Don’t let your transmission problems get bigger. Give us a call at HRS AutoCare in Nicholasville, KY today if you’re seeing signs of trouble with your car’s transmission. We can accurately and quickly diagnose the problem and let you know what your transmission needs in order to be back in perfect working order.
