Normally you probably don’t hear your transmission as it does its job. The transmission is supposed to operate smoothly, shifting from one gear to another. When you press the gas pedal down, your car should respond. Ideally, that means that the engine produces power that the transmission uses to turn the drive wheels of the car, propelling the car in the direction you want to go. But when the transmission isn’t working properly, that power transfer doesn’t happen and the transmission hesitates or fails to get that power to the drive wheels at all. And you end up not going anywhere.

It’s also possible that you’re not noticing any trouble yet, but your car’s computer is, and it turns on the check engine light. That can be a scary light to see, but it is a warning that you cannot ignore. Eventually, damage in the transmission affects the car’s engine. Getting the problem resolved sooner rather than later is extremely important because this can mean that your engine and transmission both end up failing.
