Wheel Alignments Are More Important than You Might Think

HRS AutoCare • December 15, 2021

Of all of the recommended services in your car’s owner’s manual, the one you might overlook the most is probably wheel alignments. These services aren’t seen as important, even though they very much are. HRS AutoCare has some more information to help you to understand why wheel alignments are so important for your car.

Why You Need Wheel Alignments

The question of why you need wheel alignments is twofold. First, your car’s tires and wheels are made to handle the pressures of driving, but they need to have some give, too. Bumps and jostles while you’re driving change how the wheels line up, which affects how the tires rest against the road’s surface. When the tires don’t meet the road evenly, they don’t wear evenly.

The other reason wheel alignments are so important is because they help to protect your car’s engine. Misaligned wheels mean that your car’s engine has to work exponentially more to get the car moving. The longer it has to do that, the rougher it is on your car’s engine overall. You’re more likely to experience poor gas mileage, misfires, and eventually engine damage.

When You Need Wheel Alignments

There are some very specific times when you should have a wheel alignment done. When you get new tires, for instance, it’s important to start them off with the best shot possible. That also means making sure those new wheels are balanced and properly inflated. You should also get your wheel alignment checked if you get into a wreck or if you are seeing tread wearing unevenly on any of your car’s tires.

Symptoms of Misaligned Wheels

Noticing when you’ve got a problem with wheel alignment is the important part. We’ve already mentioned that uneven tread wear is a big sign that you need your alignment checked. If you’re feeling vibrations when you drive, especially ones that seem to get worse when you speed up, that’s possibly a sign of misalignment. Hard pulling sensations as you drive are another big sign of possible alignment trouble.
